The Montgomery GI Bill program provides up to 36 months of education benefits that may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses. Members pay $1,200 over their first year of active duty to enroll in the program. They can use their benefits while in uniform and for up to 10 years following release from active duty. Some members may contribute up to an additional $600 to the GI Bill to receive up to $5,400 in additional GI Bill benefits. The additional contribution must be made while on active duty, but the increased benefit is payable only after leaving active duty. In addition, some services also contribute extra benefits to their members in the form of GI Bill "kickers. Contact local installation education centers for details.
