OEF/OIF Hazardous Exposures: Benefits

VA offers a variety of benefits and services to eligible Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) and Operation New Dawn (OND) Veterans:

Gulf War Registry Health Examination for OIF and OND Veterans
Veterans who served in the Gulf during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn are eligible for a free Gulf War Registry health examination by VA.

VA set up the Gulf War Registry health examination program to track the special health concerns of Veterans who served in the Gulf during Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom or New Dawn. The collected data enables VA to understand and address health problems more effectively.  Learn more about the Gulf War Registry health examination.

Treatment at VA War Related Illness and Injury Study Centers
VA's War Related Illness and Injury Study Centers (WRIISCs) provide clinical expertise for Veterans with deployment health concerns or difficult-to-diagnose illnesses. WRIISCs are in three locations: Washington, DC; East Orange, NJ; and Palo Alto, CA.
For an appointment at a WRIISC, a VA primary care doctor must make a referral. Learn how to get a referral to a WRIISC.

Health Care, Compensation and Other Benefits
OEF/OIF/OND Veterans may be eligible for:

  • Health care
  • Disability compensation for conditions that VA determines are associated with military service
  • A broad range of other VA programs and services

Go to the Returning Service Members (OEF/OIF) Web site to learn more.
Some OIF and OND Veterans also may be eligible for health care and disability compensation benefits for certain illnesses associated with Gulf War service.
