TAPS is a Proud Charity Partner for the Washington International Horse Show

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - October 19, 2010

WASHINGTON - The Washington International Horse Show (WIHS), being held in the Verizon Center on Oct. 26-31, will feature the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), as a charity partner.  TAPS is the national organization providing compassionate care for the families of America's fallen military heroes.

"The Washington International Horse Show is proud to honor our military service men and women by partnering with organizations that support our armed forces and their families," said Eric Straus, CEO, WIHS.

Information about TAPS will be shared at an exhibit booth during the WIHS.
"We are honored to be a partner with the Washington International Horse Show," said Bonnie Carroll, TAPS founder and chairman.

"Historically, horses are part of America's military culture, from the cavalry to the caisson. Horses can also be very therapeutic for those who are grieving the death of someone they love," said Carroll.

Klinger, a horse from the caisson platoon at Fort Myer which is part of the Army's famed Old Guard, will be on-site at the WIHS on Saturday, October 30 from 10:00am-2:00pm for Kids Day. The caisson platoon's therapeutic riding program will also deliver a special exhibition at the WIHS at 7:45pm that evening.

Klinger is the subject of an award-winning TAPS children's book, Klinger: A Story of Honor and Hope, which chronicles his life from a young colt to an equine soldier in the caisson platoon. In real life, Klinger carries out his duties for the military, which include rendering funeral honors at Arlington National Cemetery.

Horses can play an important role in helping people cope with their grief.
Children attending the annual TAPS Good Grief Camp during Memorial Day Weekend find comfort in hugging these gentle giants and learning about their service. In bonding with these special horses, they find hope and healing.
