Veterans Campaign Training Workshop
WASHINGTON D.C. -- The George Washington University will host the third Veterans Campaign Training Workshop on February 11-12, 2011, on the Foggy Bottom campus in Washington DC.
The goal is to demystify the process of campaigning for elected office and to encourage more veterans to continue their legacy of public service by running. Participants will learn the skills necessary to campaign for office at levels of government. Topics covered will include organizing a campaign, issue development, fundraising, public and media relations, getting out the vote, and much more.
The first day of the workshop will consist of an Election 2010 recap, with panels focusing on issues veterans have encountered in recent elections and what future candidates can learn from these experiences. One panel discussion will address women veterans in politics and the issues and challenges they encounter in this forum of public service.
The second day of the workshop will consist of a “campaign boot camp” that will provide attendees with a basic understanding of how to campaign for elected office. It will include briefings and panel discussions on campaign finances, staff and media planning and will also boast current elected officials with military service who will address the issues veterans face when they run for office. Special presentations include, “Bulletproofing your Record” and “Using New Media to Your Advantage.” The event schedule will be posted on Veterans Campaign’s website shortly.
Veterans Campaign is a non-partisan, non-profit organization started in 2009 by a group of student veterans. “Our mission is to provide military veterans with the training necessary to campaign for all levels of elected office,” said Seth McCormick Lynn, the founder and Executive Director of Veterans Campaign.
In April 2010, GW invited Veterans Campaign to hold a training workshop at the Foggy Bottom campus. It resulted in the non-profit organization joining GW’s newly created Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service, creating another avenue for students and veterans to pursue public service initiatives.
The workshop is open to the public. Students at GW are also encouraged to enroll in the workshop if they are considering a future in political campaigning, regardless of whether they have military experience. Attendance is limited to the first 200 registrants. Those interested in attending should log onto http://www.veteranscampaign.org and click on the tab “workshop.” The cost to attend is $200. However, due to the generosity of Veterans Campaign’s sponsors, active duty members and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces are only required to pay a $30 fee to cover their meals. GW students may attend the workshop free of charge, but must register in advance.
