Tell a Friend

As we move ever closer to November, the excitement is building for the America Salutes You concert, a nationally televised event  that will benefit and honor those who serve, past and present, and their loved ones. The concert will raise awareness and funds for some of the extraordinary non-profits that assist our military and veterans. I’m proud to be a part of this team, and invite companies, corporations and foundations interested in sponsorship opportunities to contact me. Your participation provides an opportunity to express your pride and appreciation to and for the many who have served and sacrificed to make our country free.

Best regards,

Scholarships for Military Families

ThanksUSA Scholarships

ThanksUSA Launches $100 Million Strong Campaign

ThanksUSA kicked off this past summer by launching $100 Million Strong, a campaign to grant more than 25,000 scholarships to military spouses and children in need over the next 10 years. To lead the campaign, ThanksUSA announced that the former executive director and founder of Hiring Our Heroes, retired Marine Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Schmiegel, has assumed the role of president. “The need to close the financial gap for military families seeking higher education is clear and compelling, and the $100 Million Strong campaign will help to do just that,” said Schmiegel. “While the post-9/11 G.I. Bill has supported many, it simply isn't enough for the hundreds of thousands of families serving on active duty with multiple children and only one source of income.”

Sesame Street

Sesame Street for Military/Veteran Families

Sesame Street debuted in 1969 and was designed to use television to teach preschoolers and assist a successful transition from home to school. The show gave kids the confidence to learn the alphabet, numbers, and social skills. In 2006, recognizing the need for resources to support military families, Sesame Workshop launched Talk, Listen, Connect: Helping Families During Military Deployment (TLC). TLC helped military families and their young children cope with the challenges of deployment and build resilience in times of separation and change. Sesame Workshop followed up with Talk, Listen, Connect: Deployments, Homecomings, Changes (TLC 2) and Talk, Listen, Connect: When Families Grieve (TLC 3). Since its initial launch, Talk, Listen, Connect has expanded to include a free Sesame Street/USO family tour; three PBS primetime specials; Sesame Rooms, bringing toys and furniture to military spaces; and the Military Families Near and Far website. Voting 101

Make Sure Your Vote is Counted

If you are a new voter, have recently moved, or are deployed overseas, there are steps you can take to make sure your vote is counted. Many states have residency requirements, and if you sign up for an absentee ballot, most states will only accept them by mail. That means that overseas voters must get their ballots in the mail weeks before an election. We have covered some of the basic in a blog article that you can read here.
