Happy Veterans Day from The Mission Continues
This Veterans Day, I want to thank you for supporting The Mission Continues. As an organization, we have much to be proud of. Our Fellows, volunteers, and supporters have done incredible work.
Last Saturday, to celebrate Veterans Day, The Mission Continues brought together our Fellows from across the nation. The weekend was full of inspiring stories and celebration of what our wounded and disabled veterans still have left to give. To see some of the inspiring stories from our celebration, watch CBS Affiliate KMOV's news story.
While we gathered in St. Louis on Saturday, supporter Troy Nienberg hosted a 10k Run in Ann Arbor, Michigan to fundraise for The Mission Continues. Runners started at the ROTC building on the University of Michigan campus, and finished on the field in Michigan Stadium before the start of the Michigan vs. Purdue football game. During the first quarter, The Mission Continues and runners were honored in front of a crowd of 90,000 people. This event is just one of many around the country being held to support The Mission Continues.
This afternoon, I will attend the Service Nation “Mission Serve” Kickoff in Washington, D.C., where First Lady Michelle Obama will speak about how both civilian and military service strengthen our communities. The kickoff will also include a release from Civic Enterprises of the first-ever nationally representative survey of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom veterans. The Mission Continues partnered with Civic Enterprises on this study, which finds that for this new generation of 1.8 million veterans, continued service is likely to help smooth the transition home.
In attendance with me will be Mike Pereira, Mission Continues Fellowship Program Coordinator. Mike is one of the 1.8 million OIF/OEF veterans. Through his Fellowship - and now as a staff member with The Mission Continues - continued service helped Mike transition back to civilian life. He will be speaking about his experiences today at the kickoff. To learn more about Mike's work with The Mission Continues, please watch St. Louis NBC Affiliate KSDK's interview by clicking here.
This Veterans Day, let's do more than look back with pride – let's look forward with confidence and challenge ourselves. The Mission Continues is a challenge, and will remain a challenge. If you are inspired by our work, challenge yourself: Volunteer with us. Invest in our success. Serve as a mentor, or as a friend. Inspire other wounded veterans. Together, we can ensure that every returning wounded or disabled veteran knows they are welcomed home by a community that honors their strength.
Yours in Service,
Chairman & CEO
