Military budgets operate on a "fiscal year," running from October 1st to September 30th Therefore, the 2006 military fiscal year runs from October 1, 2005 to September 30, 2006. Due to the wording that Congress uses in the annual Military Appropriations Act and the Military Authorization Act, most military pay increases do not begin until the beginning of the calendar year. The next military pay increases (if any) will be effective January 1, 2007.
