Determination and Advanced Prosthetics Make Returning to Combat Possible for Amputee Marine

When U.S. Marine Cpl. Garret Jones lost his leg in a roadside bombing that took place during his deployment to Afghanistan, he spent a year in healing. Thanks to advancements in prostheses and improved medical care, Jones had a fully functional prosthetic leg. He walks smoothly and can perform nearly every action he used to perform when actively in the military.

In the past, if he had been serving and lost his leg, he would have gotten a medical discharge and been dismissed from the military. Presently, though, he was able to return to Afghanistan, deploying for a second time to that part of the Middle East. According to other members of his unit, he demanded that he be sent back to combat.

It is instances like these that illuminate the progress medicine has made throughout the years. With about 900 of the U.S.’s 33,000 warriors wounded in Afghanistan and Iraq, those advancements in medical technology will continue to assist soldiers wishing to complete or extend their service.
