This is the first update since we launched Project Gold Star last month. As you may be aware, we need to raise $300,000 to make this important tribute to California's Gold Star Families happen. We are happy to report that we received more than $10,000 in donations last month and now have $16,711.

We also want to acknowledge that the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Department of California, recently became a Gold Level Donor with a donation of $5,000. We also sincerely appreciate the fact that VFW Commander Jack Turner has issued a challenge on the VFW's website to all Veterans Service Organizations, County Veterans Service Offices and Californians in general, to "meet or beat" the VFW's donation.  And as you can see from the Donor Level List we have quite a contest shaping up between VFW and American Legion Posts.

“We are very grateful to all of the Veterans Service Organizations and individuals who have so generously donated to Project Gold Star,” said CalVet Acting Secretary Roger Brautigan. “But we still have a long way to go to reach our goal of $300,000. I hope all Californians heed Commander Turner's challenge and donate to Project Gold Star because, whether you send a few dollars, a few hundred or a few thousand, we welcome all donations for they will propel us to our goal. There is no better way to both sanctify the sacrifice of our fallen heroes or honor the families whose lives were changed forever than by getting these Gold Star Family License plates produced.”

All donations are tax deductible.  Please see attached file entitled “Gold Star Families License Plates Background” for a list of incentives for each donor level.  Project: Gold Star Donation forms are available on our website at by clicking on Gold Star Family License Plate Fund or you can call CalVet and we will mail one to you. For your convenience, a Project: Gold Star donation form is attached to this news release.
