May is one of the most patriotic months of the year. In addition to the designation of National Military Appreciation Month, May 8th is VE Day, May 10th is Military Spouse Day, May 18th is Armed Forces Day, and May 27th is Memorial Day. These observances give our nation the opportunity to publically demonstrate our appreciation for the sacrifices made by our servicemembers, past and present, and their families. We have the opportunity to come together to formally honor, remember, recognize and appreciate their sacrifices. I hope you will take the opportunity to perform a small act of kindness for an Active Duty Military service member, Veteran, or their family. Each of us can make a difference.

Best regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Assistance for Student Veterans

1 Student Veteran

The Veterans of Foreign Wars is offering a new program called "1 Student Veteran". The program provides direct assistance to student veterans experiencing problems accessing their GI Bill or other earned benefits provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Student veterans experiencing such difficulties can now e-mail the VFW. VFW staff will acknowledge receipt of each inquiry within 24 hours during the work week. Next, they will either intervene with the VA on behalf of the student veteran or recommend other courses of action. The new program is made possible by an ongoing collaboration among VFW, Student Veterans of America (SVA) and the VA's Veterans Benefits Administration. "1 Student Veteran" is the latest collaboration between VFW and SVA, resulting from a memorandum of understanding signed by the two organizations in January. Read more here.

Heavy Equipment Training

New Heavy Metal Certification Program Launched

The National Association of Heavy Equipment Services (NAHETS) has a new national certification program that measures knowledge and skills for the operation of heavy construction equipment such as bulldozers, graders, front loaders, excavators and backhoes. Safe and effective heavy equipment operators are desperately needed in the growing construction and mining industries. The adaptable equipment proficiency test (ADEPT) is now being implemented in three heavy equipment training, the Colleges of Construction in Northern California, Oklahoma City and Atlanta, Georgia. The test effectively evaluates an operator’s skill level to meet and exceed industry and regulatory standards. A skilled worker with third-party certification is a valuable asset to contractors and employers because it verifies safety, skill and knowledge. For military veterans, certification from an approved heavy equipment training center can be the start of a rewarding civilian career in the construction industry. McGraw Gives Back

Tim McGraw

HomeFront Mortgage-Free Homes

Tim McGraw continues his HomeFront program this summer, awarding mortgage-free homes to military veterans and their families. McGraw teamed up with Chase and Operation Homefront, and they have already awarded over 30 newly renovated mortgage-free homes to deserving military families. This summer, they will award a home at each of McGraw’s 31 Two Lanes of Freedom Tour stops. McGraw explained, “I got as much – or more – out of the experience than the veterans who received the new homes … These families made an incredible mark on me, and I’m more grateful than I’ve ever been for the sacrifices they make every day to serve our country.” This program is part of a larger initiative to help raise awareness about issues facing veterans and their families, including employment, home ownership and education. Tim’s Two Lanes of Freedom Tour kicked off May 2 in Birmingham Alabama and continues to 20 more cities.

Good Read

Those We Love Most

Those We Love Most

Those We Love Most, written by Lee Woodruff, explores the ways in which a close-knit family is broken and made whole again after one pivotal moment results in the ultimate tragedy. This beautifully written book about family, love, betrayal, forgiveness, demonstrates our ability to pick up the pieces when we are faced with the unimaginable. This is solid contemporary fiction at its best. Lee’s first book, In an Instant, was co-authored with her husband Bob, the ABC News Anchor who was critically injured in Iraq in 2006. Their book helped put a face on the serious issue of traumatic brain injury among returning Iraq war veterans, as well as the millions of Americans who live with this often invisible, but life-changing affliction.
