June is PTSD Awareness Month, putting the national spotlight on what is now being recognized as a stress disorder that affects 1 in 5 servicemembers. Recently, an episode of Food Network’s show “Chopped” featured four military veteran chefs. One of the contestants, Robbie Myers, revealed that he suffered from PTSD. The former Army Senior Food Service Manager shared the difficulty he has had finding a job, due to the stigma of his diagnosis. The Fort Drum veteran and talented cook went on to win the competition, proving that he could perform under intense pressure. If you are, or know of, a Service member in need of help or treatment, resources from the National Resource Directory (NRD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)’s National Center for PTSD, are excellent places to start. Also, our friends at Give an Hour are at the ready to provide free and confidential mental health resources for those who serve, past and present, and their family members.

Dental Help for Veterans

Rebuilding Americas Warriors

Pro Bono Dental Surgeries

A number of Iraq War Veterans are experiencing major dental problems since returning home. The problem for these veterans is that the VA doesn’t pay for dental care unless a soldier is 100 percent disabled. That means they have to pay huge dental bills without any government help. One non-profit that is stepping up to the plate is Rebuilding America’s Warriors (R.A.W). Dedicated to providing reconstructive surgeries to American war veterans who have recently been wounded and/or disfigured while on active duty, R.A.W has enlisted the help of a dozen dentists nationwide. The weekend was full of informative, engaging, and inspiring events: the MOU Signing Ceremony with the Army National Guard, the Community Service Project, the benefit concert, and the all-day conference to train the next generation of mental health professionals on military culture. The concert was an evening of music, healing, and awareness building, led by new advisory board member Mark Rivera (a member of Billy Joel’s band since 1982 and Music Director for Ringo Starr’s All Star Band), Kris Allen, Gloria Reuben, Danielle Peck, The Secret State and The 9th. The conference gathered respected mental health and military professionals from around the country, for panels streamed live to a national audience. For videos, photos, and more, click here. Military and Veteran Suicides: Stemming the Tide

As they transition to civilian life, many veterans are unemployed, underemployed, homeless, in support programs or despondent. Sadly, veteran suicide levels are at their highest point since WWII, with 22 or more veterans taking their own lives each and every day. Veterans 360 has developed a clearly defined program to provide young, recently-separated combat veterans with a program of support that will help them develop the professional and interpersonal skills needed to succeed in civilian life. Veterans 360 advocates an education versus cure approach. They help these veterans manage the resources that are available to them, and guide them so they are better able to complete a successful transition into civilian life. For more information, visit them on the web.

Good Read

Hovering Horizons Book

Life From the Chopper View

Hovering Horizons is the exciting, death-defying story of Kenneth Whitley, decorated Vietnam Veteran Cobra pilot. It details how Whitley’s boyhood in a small Texas town helped create the warrior he became. Whitley takes readers through the many perils and split second decisions that he needed to make in order to stay alive in Vietnam. It continues with his journeys in Arabia and Africa, where he also met with exciting challenges of a completely different nature. Hovering Horizons is an excellent read for veterans, pilots, thrill-seekers, history buffs, or anyone who has ever wondered what it's like to live (not just travel) all around the world. Whitley’s unique stories and insights will keep you turning the pages, and when you're finished, you'll wish there were more. It’s that intriguing. Available on
