I recently read an opinion piece on the New York Times’ website by Karl Eikenberry, where the writer said he thought that Americans and their military were drifting apart. Eikenberry, a retired Army lieutenant general, was the United States commander in Afghanistan from 2005 to 2007 and the ambassador there from 2009 to 2011. So you would think that he would be in a good position to judge of this relationship, right? But I think I am also in a unique position to judge the relationship as well. At Military Connection, we constantly field phone calls and emails from those who want to do something, anything, to help our active duty military, Veterans, and their families. I see it in my own community, every time I drive past the military banners placed on the street light poles throughout the city, to honor and recognize our city’s military personnel. I see it on a national level, as so many wonderful non-profits are working to better the lives for those who serve, past and present, and their families. So let’s prove Eikenberry wrong, and step up to the plate in support of those who sacrifice so much. Please feel free to email us and let us know what you or your communities are doing to help, and we’ll post it so that we can share ideas and learn from each other.

Best regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Scam Alert

Army Scam Warning

The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command (CID) continues to warn both the Army community and the American public to be aware of internet scams and impersonation fraud, especially within social networking and dating websites. The CID frequently receives reports of various scams involving criminals pretending to be U.S. Soldiers, who prey on the victim's emotions, leading to an empty bank account for their victims. Cyber criminals also create profiles of senior Army officers in an attempt to have the victim reveal personal, banking or financial information. Report any theft to the Federal Trade Commission or by telephone at 1-877-ID-THEFT (438-4338) or TTY, 1-866-653-4261. Also, report any theft or fraud to the Internet Crime Complaint Center.

Did You Know?

Social Security Administration

Expedited Social Security Benefits

Benefits available through Social Security are different than those from the Department of Veterans Affairs, and require a separate application. The good news is that military service members can receive expedited processing of disability claims from Social Security. The expedited process is available to military service members who became disabled while on active military service on or after October 1, 2001, regardless of where the disability occurred. Additionally, there are multiple types of benefits available for veterans through both SSA and Veterans Affairs. Some of those benefits do not look at your income level at all but look instead at your military service and type of disability. If you want answers to the most frequently asked questions, click here. Having the answers to these questions will help you understand the process.

Staffing New Facilities

Calvet is Hiring

Grand Openings in Northern CA

CalVet is Hiring, Making Room for Displaced Veterans, and Addressing the VA Claims Backlog. The California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) will open the new Fresno and Redding Veterans Homes in mid-October and is currently hiring staff for both facilities. The CalVet West Los Angeles Veterans Home will soon convert 84 currently-vacant skilled nursing facility beds to independent living beds to temporarily accommodate displaced veterans. A majority of these veterans temporarily reside at the VA West Los Angeles Domiciliary and are receiving treatment there. Additionally, the recently signed Governor’s Budget authorized $3 million and 36 limited-term positions that will allow CalVet to work with VA in alleviating its massive veterans’ claims backlog. The money will be used to hire a “Strike Force” team of 12 Veterans Claims Representatives (VCR) for each of the VA regional offices in Oakland, Los Angeles and San Diego. The teams will focus on backlogged claims to ensure they are properly developed and ready for adjudication. To view all CalVet job openings, click here. To view the VCR job bulletin, click here.

Dental Help for Veterans

Rebuilding Americas Warriors

Pro Bono Dental Surgeries

A number of Iraq War Veterans are experiencing major dental problems since returning home. The problem for these veterans is that the VA doesn’t pay for dental care unless a soldier is 100 percent disabled. That means they have to pay huge dental bills without any government help. One non-profit that is stepping up to the plate is Rebuilding America’s Warriors (R.A.W). Dedicated to providing reconstructive surgeries to American war veterans who have recently been wounded and/or disfigured while on active duty, R.A.W has enlisted the help of a dozen dentists nationwide.
