I would like to congratulate Navy dependent and newly commissioned Air Force officer, Allia Grace Martinez, recipient of the first Military Connection/ ThanksUSA Scholarship! A major area of focus on MilitaryConnection.com is education, and to that end, we work with a number of colleges and universities, many of them Yellow Ribbon schools as well as excellent vocational schools, all of which value the service and sacrifices made by our nation’s military, past and present.

We offer some excellent options to reach military, veterans and their family members seeking to further their education and training. MilitaryConnection.com has a multitude of resources and information on the GI Bill, MyCAA, tuition, housing allowances, scholarships and more, and is the Go To Site for these resources and information.

Best regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Good Grief Camp

Good Grief Camp

Support TAPS & Help Families

Coping with the death of a loved one can be a lonesome and difficult journey. This weekend, more than 200 people coping with the death of a loved one who died while serving in our Armed Forces will attend the TAPS Regional Survivor Seminar & Good Grief Camp at Camp Pendleton. Organized by the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), the seminar provides a supportive environment where the families of our fallen troops come together to share their grief and meet others who have experienced similar losses, and help each other cope with the changes to their lives. In addition to seminars, camps and retreats, TAPS provides peer-based emotional support, grief and trauma resources, case work assistance, connections to community-based care, online and in-person care groups, and a 24/7 helpline. To volunteer or donate, go to www.taps.org.

Disappearing Act

Veterans 360

Are Young Veterans Turning Into Ground Squirrels?

One of the biggest challenges Vets360 has, as a veterans support organization, is outreach. While they knew there would be challenges when they developed their program, they underestimated how hard it would be to engage/find/talk to these young combat veterans. The second they exit those gates, they are gone. Hence the ground squirrel analogy. And all too often, they don’t come back until civilian life has gone sour on them. Vets360 aims to proactively engage them, before “cure” options like homeless shelters, veterans courts, substance abuse programs and suicide prevention teams kick in. If you know a Veteran who could benefit from the program, click here. If you have an interest is setting up a Vets 360 in your community, click here.

Luke's Wings

Bringing Loved Ones to the Bedsides of the Wounded

Luke’s Wings was founded by a group of young people who observed the struggles of our wounded warriors at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Luke’s Wings is a non-profit organization that helps transport the families of wounded warriors to be by their bedsides during their long, difficult recoveries. Named for Luke Shirley, a wounded warrior at Walter Reed, and Sarah Wingfield, a Redskins Cheerleader Ambassador who met Luke when she was visiting the troops at Walter Reed, Luke’s Wings aims to raise the spirits of those who have sacrificed so much. They know that the presence of a support system helps alleviate depression and reduce the risk of suicide. As of 2013, Luke’s Wings has raised more than $2 million and assisted more than 1200 wounded warrior families. Luke’s Wings is a Delta SkyWish partner, and Delta Frequent Flyers can contribute a minimum of just 1,000 airline miles by clicking here.
