“Thank you for your service.” It’s a phrase I have been saying for a long time, which lately has been under fire for being the “politically correct” thing to say. My dad served, alongside his seven brothers, so I know first-hand the sacrifices made by our Veterans. Each day, I have the privilege of interacting with those who have served and their loved ones. More often than not, their service isn’t brought up until I ask them if they are a Veteran. I find them in every walk of life, from physicians to paramedics, police officers to politicians, teachers to therapists, etc. and of course, many Veterans own their own businesses. One of my dearest friends served in the military, where she met and lost her husband, and founded a national organization to help families of the fallen. Another close friend was an Air Force nurse. When we say “thank you” to a Veteran, we are thanking them for stepping forward when others stood back. For sacrificing time with their loved ones and missing holidays and milestones. For risking life and limb to protect the freedoms we all enjoy.

Best regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Veteran School Salute

Inaugural Award

We are proud to announce that D’Youville College in Buffalo, NY, is the inaugural recipient of the Military Connection “Veteran School Salute.” D’Youville College, a Yellow Ribbon School, has shown a dedicated commitment to their Veteran and military students by consistently developing innovative ways to serve those who have served. The Veteran School Salute was conceived to recognize Veteran-friendly colleges, universities and vocational schools that go above and beyond in their efforts to provide premium education services for their Military, Veteran and military-dependent students. If there is a school deserving of being “saluted” for its efforts in providing the best educational services for its Veteran Students, please let us know. We would love to recognize other schools so that Veterans will be cognizant of the very best schools for them.

High Five to Gary

Gary Sinise

Honor. Gratitude. Rock & Roll.

As the final season of CSI:NY winds down, Gary Sinise is looking forward. After working with other non-profit organizations for years, Gary launched the Gary Sinise Foundation in 2011. To date, they have raised more than $11 million for military families, active military, and disabled vets, mostly from concerts around the world headlined by Gary’s band, the Lt. Dan Band. If this was what Gary was able to accomplish on a “part-time” basis, just imagine the possibilities! A benefit fundraiser for the Navy Yard victims and a salute for the troops at the Kennedy Center is in the works for December. To see if the talented group of musicians in the Lt. Dan Band will be in your area any time soon, click here.

Veterans Day Salute

Thank You Veterans!

There is no way we can ever properly thank members of the US Military for all that they have done. Many businesses honor Veterans and Servicemembers by offering Veterans Day discounts on goods, services and dining. Most businesses require some proof of military service, which could be a VA Universal Access Card, Military I.D., DD-214 (Discharge Papers) or in some cases, a picture of the veteran in uniform will suffice. Call to Action

Enlisted Assoc National Guard

Streamlining the VA Process

Currently, when Veterans attempt to appeal their VA rating decision, they must contact the VA and request an appeal form. This adds additional time to the already lengthy process. U.S. Representative Dina Titus (D-NV) and Jon Runyan (R-NJ) introduced H.R. 1405, to streamline a Veteran’s appeal to their VA rating. This bill requires the VA to include an appeals form with every rating decision issued by the department, eliminating having to request the form. The bill would also authorize National Guard and Reserve members entitled to Reserve retirement pay the honor of claiming "Veteran” status. This provision is identical to H.R. 679, The Honor America’s Guard-Reserve Retirees Act, introduced earlier this year by Congressman Tim Walz (D-MN). By using the "Write to Congress" feature on the EANGUS Web site, you can IMMEDIATELY write or e-mail your elected officials. Click here to contact your Congressperson to encourage them to pass this legislation.

Aspiring young American filmmakers (ages 13-18) have the opportunity to hear and record these stories firsthand, make a mini-documentary, and win coveted prizes for themselves and their school. The total value of combined prizes is over $11,000. iHistory WW2 is working with the Library of Congress to preserve the interviews in their archives.
