Building Homes for Heroes

Dunagan Family

Congratulations to the Dunagan Family

On November 6th, Gary Sinise traveled to the Sooner State to kick off a fundraising campaign for a local hero. Gary made a stop in Guthrie, OK to raise money for a "smart home" for a local hero who was severely wounded while on his second tour of duty overseas. Army SSgt. Rusty Dunagan is a triple amputee, having been wounded while serving our country in Afghanistan back in 2010. With four kids and one on the way…oops, make that five kids, Rusty’s wife just gave birth!! Where were we? Oh, yes, with FIVE kids, living space and accessibility is what Rusty wants for his family. He said, "We're looking for a place to call home." For more information on the Gary Sinise Foundation, visit them on the web. For upcoming tour dates for Gary and the Lt. Dan Band, click here.

Veterans Day Deals and Freebies

Veterans Day Salute

Thank You Veterans!

There is no way we can ever properly thank members of the US Military for all that they have done. Many businesses honor Veterans and Servicemembers by offering Veterans Day discounts on goods, services and dining. Most businesses require some proof of military service, which could be a VA Universal Access Card, Military I.D., DD-214 (Discharge Papers) or in some cases, a picture of the veteran in uniform will suffice. To check out the offers, click here. We strongly advise calling ahead and verifying participation, and we apologize in advance if you are unable to take advantage of any of the discounts or freebies due to the lack of acceptable I.D., non-participation of your local establishment in their national chain’s Veterans Day programs, etc.

Military CDL Driving Test Waiver

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is pleased to announce a new program aimed at streamlining the commercial driver license (CDL) application process by eliminating the road skills driving test requirement. In California, a CDL is required to operate large trucks and buses. To obtain a CDL, the applicant must pass a commercial medical examination, a vision examination, applicable knowledge (written) tests, and the road skills driving test. Under the Troops to Trucks program, CDL applicants will not have to take the road skills driving test. Recent state and federal law changes allow the DMV to waive the test for qualified military personnel with two or more years of military, heavy truck driving experience. For more details on this program click here.

Helping Military Kids

Military Children

Awareness Video Promotes Understanding

Over the past 12 years, 2 million military-connected children have experienced their loved one returning from a deployment(s), with little to no support. Public perception is that once reunited, the military family lives happily ever after. While proud of their loved one’s service, many of these children notice changes in personality and the visible and invisible wounds of war. The Military Children’s Collaborative Group, Inc. (MCCG) a 501(c)3, has created an awareness video that shares the challenges these children face when their loved one returns home. We hope you will take a minute to view the video, and share with your family and friends.

Honoring Local Veterans

VHC Veterans

Come Celebrate with Complimentary Food, Fun, & Entertainment

The 21st Annual Veterans’ Celebration will take place on Sunday, December 8th, 2013 from 12:00 PM-5:30 PM on the grounds of the West Los Angeles Veterans Administration. The entertainment will be headlined by Jim Belushi & the Sacred Hearts Band. This event started with a group of men who wanted to make a difference in the lives of local Veterans who had nowhere to go and no one to celebrate the holidays with. They quickly discovered that food, entertainment and appreciation were paramount to these men. By serving turkey dinners, they were able to provide an evening of love and gratitude for the 30 veterans they served. The Veterans' Holiday Celebration has since grown, last year serving over 3,500 Veterans, Active Duty Servicemembers and their families. For more information, click here.

Have a Complaint?

CFPB Begins Accepting Payday Loan Complaints

Borrowers who encountered problems with payday loans, also known as “cash advances” or “check loans,” now have some recourse. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is now accepting complaints from borrowers who had issues with the lenders of these types of loans. Payday loans are often short-term, small-dollar loans used to bridge a cash flow shortage between paychecks or the receipt of other income. If you experienced unexpected fees or interest, unauthorized or incorrect charges to your bank account, un-credited payments, or problems contacting the lender, you have grounds to file a complaint. Additionally, if you received a loan you did not apply for or did not receive money after you applied for a loan, you can file a complaint. This can be done online, by calling 1-855-411-CFPB, by fax at 1-855-237-2392, or by mail to Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, P.O. Box 4503, Iowa City, Iowa 52244.
