Patriot Day, the National Day of Service and Remembrance, is observed each September 11th in memory of all of those who perished in the 2001 attacks. In his proclamation, the president said, “As we remember all those we lost on that day and the Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice in the wars that followed, we must strive to carry forward their legacy.  On this National Day of Service and Remembrance, we take up their unfinished work and pay tribute to their lives with service and charity.  Through these acts and quiet gestures, we can honor their memory and reclaim our sense of togetherness.  I encourage all Americans to visit to learn more about service opportunities across our country.”

Debbie Gregory, CEO

An Alternative Use of Benefits

Congress has introduced and passed many bills that focus on increased services and benefits for veterans. Senator Jerry Moran (R-KS) introduced S.1870, the Veterans Entrepreneurial Transition Act of 2015, which would launch a 3-year pilot program enabling up to 250 GI Bill benefit-eligible veterans who apply to the program to start a new business or purchase an existing business or franchise. When veterans are seeking more options and want the choice to use their GI Bill benefit to start their own business, it makes sense to offer veterans a choice in accessing resources, training, and support to pursue the American dream to start a small business, create jobs, and generate growth in our economy. Scam Protection

Scam Protection

Senate Bill 386

Hats off to CA Governor Jerry Brown who signed Senate Bill (SB) 386 into law. Authored by Sen. Ben Allen (D – Santa Monica) the bill protects veterans from falling prey to investment schemes in which they are promised a lump-sum cash payment in exchange for their monthly retirement income. Once a veteran signs away his or her benefits, the company sells interests in the revenue stream generated by those future benefits to investors.  This practice is illegal under federal and state law, but several companies continue to advertise the transactions in publications targeting veterans.  SB 386 makes the act of advertising these pension poaching scams illegal, and allows prosecutors to file suit against the companies responsible for the advertisement. Is your state doing all it can to watch out for those who have served?
