Newsletter - November 2015

Tell a Friend

In the United States, November is a most momentous month. We vote for our elected officials on the first Tuesday in November. The 11th is Veterans Day. The fourth Thursday is Thanksgiving, and the entire month is Military Family Awareness Month. We have so much to be grateful for. With that said, we all need to make an effort to remember our Veterans and active military, not only on specified holidays, but all year round. There are a number of great non-profit  organizations, many of them featured in this newsletter,  that could use your support. Please consider donating your time, energy or money to assist those who have contributed to your November.

For those of you who have served, we hope you will check out our “Deals” page that features veteran and military deals and discounts, including Veteran’s Day specials, year-round deals and senior discounts.

Best regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Veterans Upward Bound

Veterans Upward Bound

Preparation for Success

Veterans Upward Bound is designed to motivate and assist veterans in the development of academic and other requisite skills necessary for acceptance and success in a program of postsecondary education. The program provides assessment and enhancement of basic skills through counseling, mentoring, tutoring and academic instruction in the core subject areas. The primary goal of the program is to increase the rate at which participants enroll in and complete postsecondary education programs. If you want to go back to school, but it has been a few years since you've been in a classroom setting, or if you could use a free refresher program to help knock the rust off of your skills, contact the veteran-friendly staff at a VUB program near you.

A Belated Thank You

Veterans Upward Bound

Honoring Their Service

During World War II, the Merchant Marine had over 200.000 seamen manning the ships that kept the military supplied throughout the world, enabling the U.S. victories. Mariners died at a rate of 1 in 24, which was the highest rate of casualties of any service. Unfortunately, many of the benefits given to other servicemembers were not extended to the Merchant Marine. HR 563, Honoring Our WWII Merchant Mariners Act of 2015, would establish a fund that would provide for a one-time payment to those who served between December 7, 1941 and December 31, 1946. Please let your elected officials know that you support this effort to thank these brave veterans.

Military Mentors

Making a Connection

Through the TAPS Military Mentor Program, TAPS connects grieving military children with individual military mentors - service members from every branch of the Armed Forces who volunteer their time to provide individual support. Children connect to their mentors at the TAPS Good Grief Camps, which are held throughout the year all across the country. When a need arises for a connection beyond the relationship established at the TAPS Good Grief Camp or in a location around the country where a TAPS camp isn't convenient for the family, TAPS will soon begin partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) to find the right connection through the BBBS Military Mentor Program (MMP). BBBS has expanded their extraordinary network of care to include children of the fallen and provide tailored support to these children. To learn more or request a mentor for your child, please call TAPS at 202-588-TAPS (8277) or email [email protected]

Saving for Retirement

Build Up Your Savings

The U.S. Treasury yesterday officially launched its myRA program, a new simple, safe, no-fee retirement savings option for the millions of Americans without access to a retirement savings plan at work. myRA makes saving simple, safe, and affordable for individuals to start saving, and is a good option for employers who do not offer a retirement savings plan to any portion of their staff, such as part-time, seasonal, or other employees.  With myRA, there are no costs to open an account, no fees, and no complicated investment options. Plus, people can choose how much to contribute – any amount that fits their budget – and they can access the money they put into their account if they need it. Also, at tax time, individuals can direct all or part of their federal tax refund to their myRA account. To learn more or sign up for an account, visit
