I have the pleasure of working with a large number of non-profit organizations and associations. One of the causes that is very near and dear to my heart is supporting the mental health of those who serve. As the daughter of a wounded warrior and niece of seven combat uncles, I know first-hand the toll that fighting can take on those who sacrifice in service to our nation and their loved ones. That is why I am a proud that is a partner in the Campaign to Change Direction. This initiative brings together concerned citizens, nonprofit leaders, and leaders from the private sector who are creating a new story about mental health, mental illness, and wellness. It is my hope that everyone will learn the “five signs of emotional suffering” so that you can recognize them in yourself, or help a loved one who may be in emotional pain. Giveaways for Military Spouses

To promote the MyCAA scholarship program, MyCareerWorks created the MyCAA Scholarship Awareness Campaign. The MyCAA Scholarship is a workforce development program that provides up to $4,000 of tuition assistance to eligible military spouses. According to a recent Military Times article, less than one-fifth of military spouses who are eligible for the Defense Department’s scholarship program are using it. In fact, more than half of those polled were unaware of the program.

To increase knowledge of the program, MyCareerWorks is launching the MyCAA Scholarship Awareness Campaign, which features Apple iPad Air and 3 Amazon Fire HD tablets monthly giveaways for military spouses. Please share this link with any military spouses you know!

Mortgage News

Put Yourself in Trusted Hands

On March 18th, mortgage rates plummeted, relatively speaking. While the average improvement of 0.10% might not look like much at face value, so far, it's been the biggest one-day drop in 2015. With this improvement, the most prevalently-quoted conventional 30yr fixed loan for top tier borrowers fell back to 3.75%. At Military Connection, we have seen, first hand, the lengths that VetsCanSave goes to in order to secure a competitive rate, even for those “hard to finance” users. It’s important to note that VetsCanSave will never sell or forward your information to multiple lenders. As the father of three Veterans, VetsCanSave President Joe Kelly has made it his mission to educate consumers on mortgage strategies that increase savings while reducing debt. You can be assured that the team at VetsCanSave will give you the benefit of their many years of experience, along with the highest level of customer service

Use It or Lose It

DoD Rolls Back Leave Carry-over Policy

Military service members' February leave and earning statement (LES) will carry a reminder that as of October 1st, any accrued leave more than 60 days will be lost. Servicemembers' LES may have an incorrect use/lose leave balance. Defense Finance and Accounting Services (DFAS) is reprogramming pay systems to account for the return to the 60 day leave carryover by the June 2015 LES. Sailors should check their LES and talk with their Command Pass Coordinator (CPC) for help understanding their correct use/lose balance. There are some specific exceptions. Commands with questions on leave policies should contact their local Personnel Support Detachment (PSD) or call the NPC Customer Service Center at 1-866-U-ASK-NPC (1-866-827-5672).

Addressing the Debt We Owe Servicemembers and Veterans

Acting Associate Attorney General Stuart F. Delery announced the creation of the Department of Justice’s Servicemembers and Veterans Initiative. This initiative will further the DOJ’s existing efforts by coordinating and expanding enforcement, outreach, and training efforts on behalf of servicemembers, Veterans, and their families. By prioritizing the enforcement of statutes created to protect civilian employment rights, voting rights, and financial security of those serving in the Armed Forces, the initiative addresses the unique challenges that servicemembers face while on active duty, that Veterans face upon returning home, and that families face when a loved one is deployed.
