Tell a Friend

June is PTSD Awareness Month, placing the national spotlight on a condition that affects so many of our servicemembers and veterans. Prince Harry of Great Britain, who served in the Royal Army for ten years, has vowed to raise awareness of this “'invisible injury.” To that end, he has joined the Campaign to Change Direction to help destigmatize mental health issues, especially as it relates to seeking help, further changing the culture of mental health. Our friends at Give an Hour are at the ready to provide free and confidential mental health resources for those who serve, past and present, and their loved ones. Another resource is the David Lynch Foundation’s Operation Warrior Wellness (OWW) program. OWW offers the Transcendental Meditation-based Resilient Warrior Program, a simple, easy-to-learn, evidence-based approach to relieving symptoms of PTSD and major depression and developing greater resilience to stress. If you or someone you know is suffering from PTSD or mental health challenges and are in need of assistance finding help, please contact us, because reaching out for help is truly courageous.

Best regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

He’s Walked the Walk

With veteran suicide, unemployment, and homelessness at an all-time high, it's no secret that transition can be hard and overwhelming.  Robert Graves’s intent with his book, How to Grow a Beard: A Military Transition Guide back into Civilian Life, is to help make the military transition as smooth as possible for his fellow veterans that will transition in the future. He does so by providing tools and lessons learned, such as reframing what sacrifice means to us, learning what we're worth in the civilian workplace, converting military service into civilian language for resumes and interviews. He also shares lessons on humility, integrating with friends and family again, and even lessons on swallowing your pride and allowing others to help out with your transitions. Whether you are about to leave the service or have already been out in the civilian trenches for a while, this book is the tool created for you - to transition successfully.

From a Military Mom

Elaine Lowry Brye thought she was well prepared for life as a military mom. After all, she grew up in the Army, married an Air Force pilot, and served in Air Force ROTC. But when all four of her children chose to serve, one each in a different branch, she realized this was a whole new daunting world.  In “Be Safe, Love Mom: A Military Mom’s Stories of Courage, Comfort, and Surviving Life on the Homefront”, she weaves advice, anecdotes, wisdom, and encouragement for military moms and the community at large, as she battles to hold down the homefront. From “Letting Go” to “You Are Not Alone” to “No Guts No Glory” Lowry Brye provides a reassuring voice for anyone who loves someone in military service. For more about the author, click here.
