Tell a Friend

As we close out April, the Month of the Military Child, we prepare for May, the month of the year that has the most military-themed designations. May is National Military Appreciation Month, a time when we can and should publically demonstrate our appreciation for the service and sacrifices made by those who have defended our country, past and present. May also celebrates Military Spouse Appreciation Day on May 6th, because all military families serve as well, VE Day on the 8th, and Armed Forces Day on the 21st. But the most solemn observance is May 30th, Memorial Day.  On that day, we honor those servicemembers who made the ultimate sacrifice. Without their contributions, we would not enjoy the freedoms that we have today.

Best regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Bravemind Vietnam: Virtual Reality Therapy

It’s been four decades since our last troops returned home from the war in Vietnam. Many who served still struggle to cope with undiagnosed and untreated Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) symptoms. In 2014 over 60,000 new Vietnam-era Veterans came forward to seek help, nearly as many as those who served in the Afghan and Iraq conflicts. Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy, or VRET has proven successful  in treating survivors to cope years after the trauma occurred. We owe Vietnam Veterans access to this treatment. A Box of Gratitude

A Box of Gratitude

Get In on the FUN!

It took Operation Gratitude 10 years and hundreds of thousands of volunteers from across the country to reach their One Millionth Care Package milestone in December 2013. The recipient was a sailor returning from combat deployment on board the USS Gettysburg. And just two and a half years later, on April 16th , Operation Gratitude volunteers assembled and shipped their 1.5 Millionth Care Package!  The increase in donor support and volunteer participation has enabled the non-profit to develop and expand their mission to "Say Thank You to All Who Serve" through the New Recruit and First Responder programs. It looks as though Operation Gratitude will ship their Two Millionth Care Package sometime in 2018. For more information, visit their web site,, and see how you can support their mission.

The Axios Production team has been capturing the feat on film and will enable the audience share the story. For more information, click here.

Taking Steps to Stem the Tide

Veteran Suicide Prevention Act

Veteran Suicide Prevention Act (H.R. 4640)

Data suggests that every 65 minutes, a veteran takes his or her own life. Congressman David Jolly (FL-13) and Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First Congressional District want to do something to prevent this tide from continuing. To that end, they have co-sponsored legislation mandating the Department of Veterans Affairs to review veteran suicide deaths during the past five years and study any correlation between those deaths and psychiatric drug prescriptions. Travis Mills Foundation

Overcoming Obstacles

Overcoming Obstacles

SSG Travis Mills, US Army 82nd Airborne, was severely injured on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan losing portions of both arms and both legs.  He is one of only five quadruple amputees to survive such extensive injuries.  Travis’s special strength of character and personality helped him rehabilitate quickly and inspire other wounded soldiers to do the same.  The Travis Mills Foundation (TMF) Maine Chance Retreat, currently under construction, will provide a fully accessible family retreat for combat wounded veterans families helping them discover a new normal and healthier reintegration when they return home. Programs in development by his foundation will take a long term approach towards helping combat-disabled veterans overcome physical obstacles, strengthen their families, and provide well-deserved rest, relaxation, and adaptive recreation.  Travis wants to instill a “never give up, never quit” spirit in veteran families to help them redefine their new normal.
