Expanded Eligibility

Good New for More Veterans

The Department of Defense has made a policy change to broaden who it will allow to shop online for discounted military exchange products. Effective Veterans’ Day, 2017, the benefit will add 16 million honorably discharged veterans to the rolls of eligible shoppers, joining several million vets who already shop in exchanges — on base or online — because they are active or reserve component retirees, 100-percent disabled from service-connected injuries or ailments, or Medal of Honor recipients. Not only does the change reward those who have served by giving them a 20 percent savings over commercial department stores, but it will also increase exchange revenues to offset recent declines.

For over thirty years, Gary has stood as an advocate of America’s servicemen and women, beginning in the 1980s with his support of Vietnam veterans through today. Gary’s dedication to all those who protect our nation has become a tireless crusade of service and gratitude. We invite you to take 6 minutes and 15 seconds and watch the Gary Sinise Foundation’s 2017 Impact video, so you can see, first hand, the great work that gets done. Romantics Beware

Do Your Due Diligence

Valentine's Day is less than two weeks away, there will probably be a surge in 'romance scam' reports. The scam involves an online scammer tricking a victim into believing he or she is 'in a relationship' with an American Soldier and then hustling the victim out of his or her money. We often get calls at our office asking us if this request is really from a legitimate servicemember. More often than not, servicemembers have had their identities stolen and it’s the scammers who are using this information. Report any theft or suspicious activity to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, the Federal Trade Commission, and the Identity Theft Clearinghouse at 1-877-ID-THEFT (438-4338) or TTY 1-866-653-4261.

And While We’re on the Subject

Here’s Another Scam to Avoid

Here’s Another Scam to Avoid

Veterans' benefits, including their pensions, are being targeted in a new scam. The bad guys claim to be veterans’ advocates, and show up at assisted living facilities and senior centers. The scam involves convincing the veteran to transfer their assets into a special trust account, then charging them exorbitant fees to help complete lengthy, complicated paperwork associated with the transfer. The veteran is told the asset reallocation will allow the person to qualify for aid and attendance benefits. But, this is not true. If you are approached by scammers, contact your local police or sheriff's department.

Operation Warrior Wellness

Healing the Hidden Wounds of War

Over half a million U.S. troops deployed since 2001 suffer from PTSD. Yet less than 20% will receive adequate care due to lack of effective treatments, fear of stigma or insufficient government resources. Half of those with PTSD won't receive any care at all. Left untreated, PTSD cripples functioning and places veterans at great risk for violent and self-destructive behavior. Operation Warrior Wellness (OWW), a division of the David Lynch Foundation, offers the Transcendental Meditation-based Resilient Warrior Program, a simple, easy-to-learn, evidence-based approach to relieving symptoms of PTSD and major depression and developing greater resilience to stress. For more information on Operation Warrior Wellness, including inquiries on how to learn TM, click here.

Tracking Your Refund

Tax Refunds May Come Late

Tax Refunds May Come Late This Year

If you’re expecting an income tax refund, the refund may take longer than in previous years. Signed into law at the end of 2015, the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act requires the IRS to hold tax refunds for people claiming Earned Income Tax Credit and Additional Child Tax Credit until at least Feb. 15, 2017. Also, new identity theft and refund fraud safeguards by both the IRS and individual states mean some tax returns and refunds may face additional review. After Feb. 15, most refunds will be issued within the normal timeframe: less than 21 days after being accepted for processing by the IRS. The best ways to check the status of a refund? Go to "Where's My Refund?" tool on or the IRS2Go phone app .

Talia’s Law

Protecting Military Children

Protecting Military Children

A new law, signed by President Obama a few weeks before he left office, aims to reduce the problems surrounding military child abuse and neglect. Known as "Talia's Law,"  the legislation was named after Talia Williams, who, in 2005, died after months of abuse by her stepmother and father, a soldier stationed at Schofield Barracks. Despite multiple reports to military officers, Hawaii state child protection services was never contacted. There have been about 100 child abuse deaths on U.S. bases in the last decade.

Confidential Support

Victim's Rights

Program Protects Victim’s Rights

The U.S. Army has developed the Special Victim Counsel Program to protect the rights of sexual assault victims. Special victims' counsels are specially trained military attorneys, duty-bound to work for no one but the victim. The military now requires that victims reporting an assault be notified of their right to consult with a special victims' counsel and of the availability of other legal assistance at the time they report a sexual assault. Also, no one in a victim's chain of command or the accused's chain of command may influence a special victims' counsel in providing legal support to a victim. Members who have been affected by sexual assault can access 24/7, confidential, anonymous support through the DOD Safe Helpline by calling 877-995-5247.
