As we approach Labor Day, it’s important to remember how many Americans, especially our separating military and Veterans, need and deserve excellent jobs. With great tax incentives in place, hiring these heroes makes financial sense, but moreover, it's the right thing to do. We're happy to report that the Military Connection newsletter was able to generate some great job leads for Valerie Brown. For those of you who don't know Valerie, she is an unemployed Veteran who went as far as an appearance on Late Show with David Letterman to try to find a job. Valerie was featured in our last newsletter, and we're pleased to say that we have been contacted by some wonderful employers interested in hiring her. Valerie is just the tip of the iceberg, and as more service members return home and separate, it is imperative for employers to step up and hire these men and women.

Warm regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Deadline October 21st

Stop Loss

You've Earned It, DON'T LOSE IT!

We know it’s only September, but October will be here sooner than you know. Although the deadline to apply for Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay has been re-instated and extended to October 21, 2012, this may be the final deadline. Service members and veterans whose military service was involuntarily extended under the “Stop Loss” program between the 9/11 terrorist attacks and Sept. 30, 2009, are eligible for special retroactive pay. The special pay is compensation for the hardships the involuntary extensions caused, officials said. Eligible members or their beneficiaries may submit a claim to their respective military service to receive $500 for each full or partial month served in a Stop Loss status. Because the majority of those eligible had separated from the military, many eligible service members, veterans and their beneficiaries are not aware of the benefit. Off to a Great Start

Joining Forces

125,000 Veterans Hired!

Through the combined efforts of Joining Forces and recent legislation giving tax incentives to employers who hire Veterans, we are seeing a 20 percent decrease in veteran unemployment, compared to this time last year. Although it is good start, there are still 80% of unemployed Veterans who need jobs. We know America’s post 9/11 veterans have the skills to lead America’s economic recovery, they just need the opportunity. 2,000 companies have also recognized this by pledging jobs through Joining Forces. In the last year, 125,000 Veterans and Military Spouses have been trained or hired through the program. First Lady Michelle Obama has announced that these 2,000 have upped the ante by pledging an additional 250,000 jobs, including 50,000 for military spouses. My Service Impact

Research Study

There’s a lot of confusion about the unique concerns and experiences of active duty service members and veterans who deployed as part of Operations Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and/or Enduring Freedom (OEF). My Service Impact is a brief, online, non-intrusive, and completely anonymous study to work with veterans and service members on their own terms. If you are an OIF/OEF active duty service member or veteran, and have 60 – 90 minutes to spare, you can volunteer to participate in this research. Participation involves completing an online and an anonymous questionnaire battery that asks about your work in the military, exposure to combat, emotions, and behavior. If you are interested in participating or would like additional information, please click here.
