As the year winds down and the holidays approach, we at MilitaryConnection.com want to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and wish you a healthy and happy holiday season. We hope that throughout the year you have utilized the valuable resources and information we send out through this newsletter, as well as the resources on our website. We hope you visit often.

As we enjoy the holidays with our loved ones, let's remember that those who sacrifice and serve our nation are far from home and families. There are a number of fantastic non-profit groups that send a bit of home and comfort to our troops year-round, and they deserve our support. And remember those acts of kindness for military families, who also serve, but seldom get the recognition.

Warm regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Helping our Veterans

Leshonda with Iraq Star Surgeon Dr. Laurence Rifkin

Leshonda with Iraq Star Surgeon Dr. Laurence Rifkin

Did you know that less than 1% serve in the Armed Forces?  It is up to the rest of us to do our part. At MilitaryConnection.com, we are committed to serving our nation's military, veterans and their families.  We have the pleasure of working with and assisting many outstanding non-profits, associations and government agencies.  Over Thanksgiving, we were notified by the Iraq Star Foundation of a situation regarding a disabled Veteran in need, who had been severely wounded in Iraq, and was now homeless, in of all places, our nation's Capital. This was unacceptable!  By pooling resources, we were able to assist in bringing Leshonda to California, where she is now starting to put her life back together. But she needs support. The Iraq Star Foundation is providing Leshonda with the additional reconstructive surgeries she needs. In the meantime, she is submitting for much deserved benefits, which will take 3-6 months to process. If you wish to contribute to Leshonda, or receive a list of non-profits that help our heroes and their loved ones, please click here.  Indicate if you want to assist Leshonda or  receive a list of non-profits, and if you have any special area of interest you would like to support. It is up to the 99% to stand up for our Veterans.

Teachers Change Lives

Inspirational Teacher Awards

In many people's lives there is at least one teacher who inspired them, and helped them become who they are today. They often see in us more than we see in ourselves, more than our families see and, as a result, help us to evolve into who we ultimately become. To celebrate the significant role of teachers in society, The Kennedy Center/Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Awards will spotlight some of the country's most inspirational teachers and recognize them for their contributions. For more information or to nominate your favorite teacher, click here. Nominations close on Friday, December 16th, so don't wait!

Attention Boxing Fans: Benefit for Veterans

Veterans Farm

Home of the Red, White and Blueberry

The second annual "Fight for the Veterans" is coming up on January 21st at the UNF arena in Jacksonville, FL. 100% of the proceeds from this event will go to Work Vessels for Veterans and Veterans Farm to support disabled combat veterans. Veterans Farm founder Adam Burke, a combat veteran and Purple Heart recipient knows that simply giving veterans a hand out is not a sufficient and sustainable way to help these men and women get their lives back on track. Horticulture therapy has been proven to help with cognitive issues which our veterans are facing. This therapy can help veterans to learn new skills, as well as improve decision making and problem solving skills. In addition to learning a valuable skill, veterans have the opportunity to find healing and regain a sense of purpose for their lives. To find out more, visit them on the web.

Healing Through the Arts

Healing through the Arts

On November 16th the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) hosted a two-part presentation at the White House featuring NEH-funded programs that work with veterans, military families, and caregivers. The Maine Humanities Council's Literature and Medicine, an inclusive reading and discussion group for VA hospital staff, is active in 20 VA hospitals across the country. One participant said it "teaches so much compassion and empathy and to see the world through the patient's eyes." The Aquila Theatre's Ancient Greeks/Modern Lives is visiting 100 sites around the country, performing Ancient Greek drama and discussing themes like soldiers' homecoming. Because it was written by combat veterans for combat veterans, Greek drama is still relevant to modern war veterans, even after 2500 years. The event video is available online.
